Consumers have to provide “express written consent” before you can send them marketing communications via text message. This article covers the three steps you need to take in order to receive full consent from the customer at the time of checkout. 

  • Request that the customer sign up for marketing updates.
  • Explain that the customer will be receiving text messages from you.
  • Request that the customer provide their phone number.

From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Checkout.

Scroll down to the Form options section

Here you can set the Shipping address phone number to:

  • Required

Scroll down to the Email marketing

Make sure Show a sign-up option at checkout is checked

Make sure Pre-select the sign-up option is not checked

Click on Save

Next, Scroll to Checkout language

Click on Manage checkout language

Search for Accept marketing checkbox label

In the field value, paste the following:

Keep me up to date on news and exclusive offers via email and text*


Search for Optional phone label

In the field value, paste the following:

Mobile phone


Search for Phone label

In the field value, paste the following:

Mobile phone


Search for Terms of service

In the field value, paste the following:

I agree to receive automated text messages at the phone number provided. Consent is not a condition to purchase.


Click Save to update your changes.
